Synchronizing GV I/O to a Time server

Note: This procedure is only required for GV I/O with SDI workflows.

The high processing requirements of digital video can overwhelm the processor on a standard desktop PC, resulting in wait-times that destroy the video’s essential real-time aspect. Therefore it is required for GV I/O with SDI workflows to slave the Windows Operating System to a PTP (Precision Time Protocol) or NTP (Network Time Protocol) Time server.

It is recommended to slave to a PTP server, as PTP networks aim to achieve nanosecond- or even picosecond- level synchronization. If PTP is available within the facility, then this can be used by adding a registry value to add the IP address of the network interface.

If PTP is not available, then Grass Valley recommends to slave GV I/O to an NTP time server. It is recommended that the NTP client is locked to a Time server within the facility originating from the SPG providing the black burst reference.

CAUTION:
Do not use the internal WinOS NTP client or any other 3rd party NTP client as they are all unreliable in keeping the time.
